On a recent trip traveling up north, I had a lot of time to gaze out of the window to see the world in which we live. We drove for miles, hour after hour taking in the small towns, the flat land and the rolling hills which stretched out before us. The clear view changed occasionally when the rain poured down! My thoughts were interrupted by the heavy wheelers which passed us carrying cargo to parts unknown. To pass the time away we listened to music, to the news and when we got tired of that we talked and laughed.
One of the news items we could not ignore was the launch of the Blue Origin Capsule. The news story filled the airways. On board the capsule was ninety year old William Shatner – better known for his role as Captain Kirk in the long lasting series of Star Trek. As children we loved to watch Star Trek. I can’t say, I dreamed of going to space but the cast drew me in.
I think why everyone was so engrossed in the story – at least we were, was because of Shatner’s age. Ninety years old and he was brave enough and well enough to take this journey. He openly admitted that he was nervous and we were all nervous for him.
I think what really struck me were his comments after he returned from his few minutes in space. He was so in awe of all he saw and experienced. He remarked, "I hope I can maintain what I feel now."
"What you have given me is the most profound experience I can imagine," Shatner said.
Shatner was so emotional about his encounter with weightlessness, of seeing the earth from space, of experiencing the piercing blue sky and moving into total darkness the further they climbed.
He wanted more people to be witnesses to what I am calling a spiritual experience. He thought of life and death and the big earth we live in.
I too wish that we could all get away and drive through this beautiful country we live in. The one thing the pandemic has made me realize is how much I have taken for granted.
In the reading from the Book of Job, Job remarked, “I had heard of You [only] by the hearing of the ear, But now my [spiritual] eye sees You.” Job 42:5 (AMP)
What is it that I need to see? What is it that you need to see? Family, friends, a roof over your head, clothes, a job. Or forgiveness, grace, mercy? My friends, open your eyes to see God. See what he has given you and love it!
