God's Kindness

Kindness comes in so many different forms. We are kind with a simple smile, listening as someone tells their story; offering to help in some way; giving a thoughtful gift; or an extravagant present; a selfless act or gesture.

The verses below are from 2 Samuel 4:4 and 2 Samuel 9 and they tell of God's kindness shining through King David. I have picked through the verses in order for you to get the gist of the story.

King David's best friend Jonathan and his father Saul are killed in battle. When the nurse of Jonathan's son hears of their death, she flees and falls, causing the young child to lose the use of his legs.

The child spent his childhood living in poverty until King David inquired as to if there are any relatives of Jonathan alive, that he may show kindness, God's kindness to them.

And Saul and his son Jonathan are dead.”

4 (Jonathan son of Saul had a son who was lame in both feet. He was five years old when the news about Saul and Jonathan came from Jezreel. His nurse picked him up and fled, but as she hurried to leave, he fell and became disabled. His name was Mephibosheth.)

The king asked, “Is there no one still alive from the house of Saul to whom I can show God’s kindness?”

Ziba answered the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan; he is lame in both feet.”

“Don’t be afraid,” David said to him, “for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.”

Jonathan's son, who should have lived the life of a royal, was living in poverty. There seemed no way out of it. When he least expected it, his cloud of poverty was lifted.  Our trying periods do come to an end even when it seems they have been going on for some time. When we least expect it, our trials end. Some end because of someone's kindness. Do you know of someone who could benefit from a phone call, a text, a card, a smile or prayer? This is what David meant by God's kindness. God's kindness comes in many forms to warm our hearts, encourage us through difficult moments and provide shelter in the storm.
