The Battle is Not Yours

Jehoshaphat is moving into battle but first, he must seek God's will.

2 Chronicles 20:3-23  I encourage you to read the passage in its entirety.

Jehoshaphat was afraid; he set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. 4 Judah assembled to seek help from the Lord; from all the towns of Judah they came to seek the Lord.

and said, “O Lord, God of our ancestors, are you not God in heaven? Do you not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations? In your hand are power and might, so that no one is able to withstand you.

O our God, will you not execute judgment upon them? For we are powerless against this great multitude that is coming against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”

Then the spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel son of Zechariah, son of Benaiah, son of Jeiel, son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the middle of the assembly. 15 He said, “Listen, all Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, and King Jehoshaphat: Thus says the Lord to you: ‘Do not fear or be dismayed at this great multitude; for the battle is not yours but God’s. 1

Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Listen to me, O Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem! Believe in the Lord your God and you will be established; believe his prophets.” 21 When he had taken counsel with the people, he appointed those who were to sing to the Lord and praise him in holy splendor, as they went before the army, saying,

“Give thanks to the Lord,

    for his steadfast love endures forever.”

22 As they began to sing and praise, the Lord set an ambush against the Ammonites, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah, so that they were routed. 23 For the Ammonites and Moab attacked the inhabitants of Mount Seir, destroying them utterly;

How can we keep singing in the face of difficulty? The above passage from 2 Chronicles shows how Jehoshaphat was able to overcome his powerlessness and hopelessness against his enemies. The prophet reminded him that the battle is not yours but God's. And after praying and receiving this word from God through the prophet, Jehoshaphat began praising and he and his soldiers sang praises, "Give thanks to the Lord, for his steadfast love endures forever."

Can we adopt this mantra? The soldiers are singing at the battle. Can you imagine the faces of their opponents? What would happen to our battles if we sang and praised God before we went into battle against hostility, anger, sickness, hunger, racism, poverty, covid 19.

Sing, sing and praise as difficult as it is; sing to the Lord. Let Him know how thankful you are for what you do have. His love, His grace, His mercy. Put your eyes on God and His Son Jesus Christ.

Below is the song, "The Battle is not yours."

The lyrics say;

There is no pain Jesus can't feel
No hurt He cannot heal
For all things work according to His perfect will

No matter what you're going through
Remember God is using You
For the battle is not yours, it's the Lord's

There's no sadness Jesus can't feel
And there is no sorrow that He cannot heal
For all things work according to the Master's holy will

Be blessed! Be safe!
