Ancient Words

On Sunday we sang the song “Ancient words.” I was concerned with it being a new song, that it may not be well received. However, it was obvious that everyone was enjoying it as they sang with gusto.

The chorus goes this way,

“Ancient words, ever true, changing me and changing you. We have come with open hearts, O let the ancient words impart.”

We read ancient words on a daily basis in our bibles. The ancient words are filled with love, peace, compassion, conviction and wisdom. I am so grateful for these ancient words. For they fill my soul when the world seems unsteady; when grief is unbearable; when bad news is difficult to swallow; when happiness spills over. These words can all be found in our bibles.

Psalm 139 assures us that God is within reach of our breath.

O Lord, you have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away. You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways.

God lights our paths daily; Genesis 1:16

God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars.

Help all: Exodus 23:5

5 When you see the donkey of one who hates you lying under its burden and you would hold back from setting it free, you must help to set it free.

God is a God of comfort: Isaiah 49:13

Sing for joy, O heavens, and exult, O earth; break forth, O mountains, into singing! For the Lord has comforted his people, and will have compassion on his suffering ones.

Make wise decisions: Ephesians 5: 13-15

13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. 14 This is why it is said: “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

15 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise.

Paul’s inner conflict: Romans 7:15

15 I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.

Faith and works: James 2:17

17 So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.

My friends, there are so many ancient words in the bible that speak to me. I have chosen some familiar ones and some not so familiar. These words change me and you and they impart discernment – am I doing the right thing? They impart mystery and wonder; they impart wisdom and understanding.

Go to your bibles today. If you are finding difficulty reading the passage, listen to the audio bible or select just a few verses at a time. Call me, let's discuss together.   During Lent, go deeper!
