Sunday Feb 14th is Valentine’s Day. It’s the day we think of romantic love and what wonderful gifts we are going to give to our partners. When I think of love, I think of the passage below from Song of Songs 2:8-13.
Listen! My beloved!
Look! Here he comes,
leaping across the mountains,
bounding over the hills. 9 My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag. Look! There he stands behind our wall, gazing through the windows, peering through the lattice. 10 My beloved spoke and said to me, “Arise, my darling, my beautiful one, come with me. 11 See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone. 12 Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come, the cooing of doves is heard in our land. 13 The fig tree forms its early fruit; the blossoming vines spread their fragrance. Arise, come, my darling; my beautiful one, come with me.”
This passage speaks of a love that is fresh and full and sensual. It makes me want to fall in love all over again.
While I do cherish romantic love, I think when we love someone that love goes much deeper than romantic love. The raw, authentic love I think of is agape love. What is agape love? Agape love is intentional, self-giving sacrificial love. It is a love that is faithful, committed, not expecting anything in return. If only we could love like that every day. While the Song of Songs passage brings to mind romantic love, it is meant to signify the love that exists between God and those He created in His image – US. Could you express your love for God in this manner? Jesus has taught us how we are to love God. In Matthew 22:35-38, we read, 35 “One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’” With all your heart, soul and mind requires our entire being when we love God. Can we then transfer this intense love to our daily lives.
“18 Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action.” 1 John 3:18
Let your love be seen in your actions.
Whatever love you exhibit on Valentine’s Day, it should be shown every day. Love does not have an off day. It remains day in and day out.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
