Almost, a year ago, our lives were impacted with the overwhelming feeling of dread as the realization of a world health pandemic Covid 19 settled in our country. We could not imagine that a year later, we would still be facing the fear of this pandemic. While the numbers have slowed over the past several weeks, anxiety remains high. The numbers of those affected and those who have died are staggering. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel as vaccines are being administered throughout the land.
I don’t know about you, but I am tired of Covid 19 and what it has done to us. The losses are many. Although we have grown and learned much about ourselves, I cannot help but feel I have missed out on something over the past year.
In times like these, it is important to remember we serve a living God who sees all and knows all. My focus, your focus needs now to be on God as we make the turn to move back into “normal” life; whatever “normal” would mean. Recently, I was sent an article from a mentor of mine who is a mental health counselor. A part of her article dealt with PTSD – Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. One doctor in helping others to conquer their PTSD, came up with the acronym PERMA. He felt that if "helplessness can be learned, OPTIMISM can be learned."
P – Positive Emotions. By staying positive, it allows for a way forward. Jeremiah 15:19; “you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless.” Apostle Paul urges us, “Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Phil 4:8.
E-Engagement – No isolating. Stop soaking in your sorrow. Get back in the flow. Engage in the presence of God. One way in which to do this is to worship; the reading of scriptures and prayer. Prayer brings you fully in the presence of God and His son Jesus Christ where we can bare our souls.
R – Relationships – Seek them out! Develop them again. Friends help shoulder our burdens. Seek out Jesus Christ! I thought of the hymn, “What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear.” Matthew 11:28-30 Jesus said “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
M – Mission – You need something bigger than yourself. God has not changed His mind. God is going to fix it. Are you currently involved in ministry? Serving God gives us a purpose – a very rewarding purpose.
A – Accomplishments – You’ve got to have some wins. Focus on them. The bible says we are more than conquerors! It helps to have a hero character like Jesus. List your accomplishments; they may not be big ones; even small achievements can make a big difference.
When anything wants to overtake you, I hope you remember the acronym PERMA. Share it with your family and friends. You may be surprised to hear they are having similar feelings. Share your stories with a trusted friend, be real and let your feelings be heard and seen. You will find you feel freer after that experience.
If you are repeatedly feeling overwhelmed, seek professional help.

We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer.
